Between

Between layers Victorian glass magic lantern slides to create composite forms that appear suspended within the glass, hovering between flat image and three-dimensional space.

Originally designed for projection, the lantern slides carry their own histories of illumination and viewing. Israel recombines these obsolete image technologies to create works in which figures, interiors and landscapes collapse into one another, generating unstable spatial relationships.

The layered slides are housed within illuminated Shadow Boxes, where light activates the image from within the glass itself. Neither fully photographic nor fully sculptural, the works occupy an uncertain space between projection, object and apparition.
